I would immediately check with your carnet issuer, they should know before anyone.
Good luck, and please let us know what you find!

Yes, you need a carnet for Australia.
You'll need CTP (Compulsory Third Party insurance) - we obtained ours in Queensland - initially they said that they didn't issue CTP for foreign vehicles however relented once we talked to a supervisor. AA of Australia helped us navigate the uncertainties with this. If you ship into NSW you may have a problem because in NSW CTP is in the price of petrol, however when you leave NSW you'll need a certificate. At first we (mis) understood that we would have to get CTP for every state and ACT, however we found that the Queensland CTP covered all of Australia.
There are lots of stories on various fora that you need safety inspection and some other state stuff, but with the carnet, as long as the vehicle and bike are legal at home you don't need state inspections. The stories have to do with people importing vehicles (and registering them in Australia).
If your Defender is LHD you don't need a LHD sticker (it's not over the limit for this in terms of GVM).
You will not have to pay road tolls - foreign-registered vehicles are ignored.
If you need an agent in Australia I can recommend one (the one we used).
If you have other questions on shipping into/driving in Australia let me know and I'll be happy to offer suggestions.

Unless things have changed in the four months that we have been enjoying the cool summer in Tasmania, the NSW CTP is not included in the price of fuel, but has to be purchased separately from a handful of approved providers

It might be out of date now but I shipped my bike into WA and needed a safety inspection to get insurance which was only available through their vehicle registration office, it was pretty much like a UK mot test.

Good to know. Clearly every state (and the territory) is different. We didn't plan to enter via Queensland to simplify the process, however it seems that it was a good choice.

This is very useful information. Is there any info on the same process in Northern Territory (Darwin)? It's a very popular entry point for overlanders shipping their vehicles to Oz from southeast Asia (Dili, Malaysia etc.)

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
