I am a Canadian citizen with a Canadian passport.
I plan to travel as a tourist through Central America alone - NO tour - on my motorcycle, a Honda 2002 VTX1800R.

you generally have to buy insurance at the border if it is compulsory. generally useless but generally not expensive. you can get mexican insurance from drive thrugh insurance booths on the american side. but shop around, prices vary considerably. I found it much cheaper to take out a year insurance rather than a few weeks. in belize you have to use the government insurance agency.

I'm from the UK and doing something fairly similar. I've done quite a bit of research into motorbike insurance and there aren't many (any) companies that will insure your motorbike.
The best I could do was buy travel insurance that covered all medical needs for me if I was in an accident and then buy motorbike insurance at the border of the country I am entering (if they have it). To us this sounds silly, but is many countries in that part of the world you probably will not get motor insurance.
Make sure your travel insurance provider knows you are on a motorbike and their policy does not have a limit on the size of motorbike you ride. There weren't many travel insurance companies that would do this in the UK.
For the USA I bought temporary motorcycle insurance from motorcycleexpresDOTcom. They are very good.

Hi Ness, get Mexican insurance on line, Mexpro.com seems to be the best deal if you have a Canadian license, if you are on a Brit or International license use Sanborn.com. Six months seems to be cheaper than 1 week. Insurance is not compulsary for Mexico but having it will keep you out of jail if you have an accident, guilty until proven innocent is the name of the game in Latin America, they will impound your bike until blame is decided but the insurance lawyer will protect you from being incarcerated. Guatamala was US$12.00 at the border but as for the rest of CA I would say check at each border and if you do buy, remember that you will be returning and usually buying a 3 or 6 months period is cheaper than 2 lots of 1 month. Ride safe.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
