Central America TIP suspension / Long term storage for vehicle / Exit with expired TI
Dear Fellows Adventurers,
Currently riding in Honduras, I need to fly to Europe this summer and will have to leave my californian plated KLR during several months. Do you have a clue on the followings :
- Freezing the local Temporary Importation Permit : is it possible in any country of Central America? Period allowed and fees involved ?
- Storing the bike in the customs warehouse : is it necessary to freeze the TIP or can I just freeze and store the bike in a private place? How can I contact the customs to ask for the address, process and fees ? Even with research in Spanish they are hard to find.
- Storing the bike in a private place, let expire the date allowed by the TIP and take the risk to pay a fine while exiting the country in the future : did anyone experience this ? What kind of amount can be expected ?
I am flexible on the country I would store the bike in, don't mind (actually would enjoy) riding extra few days to ensure good storage conditions at fair costs.
Any input will be much appreciated !
Johan
