Dual Nationality - travelling with two passports

I have dual nationality, UK & Irish and I have two passports. I am planning a charity motorcycle trip next year and see that some visas are cheaper on the UK passport and others cheaper on the Irish one.

It got me thinking, has anyone on here travelled with two passports, using one for some visas and the second passport for others? Have you had any problems or issues with it, and do you have any sensible advice on the subject?

Thanks

R

If the passport has no stamps in it (entry/exit) you may be asked where you came from and why you have no stamp in the passport. Best if you have a few stamps as they won't look in detail unless they have concerns... like being in a country adjacent to where they don't like you going.

If you have problems in a country - use the embassy of the passport you used to get into that country... the other one may be less inclined to help (don't volunteer the information unless you have too).

The more stamps you have the easier it is to pass through (assumed experienced traveller by the guard).. unless you go to the one country frequently ... or group of countries (assume potential trafficker).

Ware a smile .. answer questions honestly .. but only answer the question, don't provide excess information. Don't ask questions, do that either well before teh boarder or well after, never at the boarder.

Thanks Warin,

Some good advice there. My UK passport has a few stamps in it as I went to Russia 3 years ago, but the Irish one is new and we don't get them stamped anymore in the EU.

I am not going to any countries where there are stamp issues, i.e. Israel and Arab countries so that shouldn't be an issue. The only problem we could come across is either losing a passport or having it stolen. So I guess the real issue is whether there are any countries where it is illegal to bring two passports in with you.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
