getting back carnet deposit money
Hello,
We are planning a northcape (norway) to southcape (SA).
Reading about Carnet de passage, some people say it is difficult to get back the depositmoney. As we will be traveling Egypt there will be al lot of money in deposit, witch can by useful wen we get back home and are jobless.
My question is: Can you count on getting back the deposit money? Or should we save money for the first months when we are back home in surch for new yobs?
Sorry for my crappy english .
Regards Peter

Peter,
..."some people say..."
It all depends on the refund timing/ procedures of the particular national auto club that issues the Carnet.
Assuming you're Dutch and your bike is NL-registered, that means the
Koninklijke Nederlandsche Automobiel Club, KNAC | Koninklijke Nederlandse Automobiel Club [?]--or whichever organization in the Netherlands issues the Carnet to Dutch-registered vehicles.
Who are "some people"? Are these people also Dutch motorcycle riders who got the Carnet from the Dutch club?
I'm [only] guessing that the Dutch auto club issues relatively few Carnets (compared to, for example, the German ADAC, or Brit RAC). It's possible the Dutch auto org is slower--or not--on refunds?
To get a good answer to your question, you really need to talk directly to whichever auto org issues the Carnet in the Netherlands, find out in detail how long that org says they will take to refund your Carnet (and compare what the org says to the actual experience of other Dutch riders).
Good luck

Thanks Court.
De dutch traffic organisation doesn't issue Carnets, but via their website they direct travelers to the German ADAC.
Some people say.....
Thats why I ask here for other peoples experiences.
I read about UK riders whom had trouble getting back their deposit after the trip, I dont know exactly why.
I hope other riders will share their experiences with deposit returns here.
Regards,
Peter

Both times I've had a carnet from the RAC in the UK my deposit came back without a problem. Can't remember exactly how long it took but it was before I started to get worried - around a few weeks.

OK...and in addition to whatever actual experience is reported here for Dutch riders getting Carnet refunds from ADAC, it would be worth an email/ tel dialogue directly with the ADAC Carnet office in Munich.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
