Getting mercosur in Uruguay

Hi ...

I am a South African starting a motorcycle trip of South America. I shipped my bike from South Africa to Montevideo in Uruguay and now I'm having difficulty finding Mercosur insurance cover.

Apparently Mercosur cover is easy to get if you're a local, but everywhere I've looked I've been told there's no mercosur insurance product available in Uruguay for foreigners. I have a 1 month tourist travelers insurance with BSE at the moment, valid for Uruguay only.

I'm heading to Argentina in a month via Fray Bento so I need cover before then. I plan on visiting most of South America but for now, I need cover for Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia (not sure if this country is covered by Mercosur), and Chile.

As a last resort, I can head into argentina via a border crossing that does not ask for insurance (I heard the crossing near Paysandu is pretty lax), then get Mercosur cover once I'm in argentina, but I would prefer to be properly covered before then.

For now I have emailed a few insurance companies and I'm waiting for responses.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Try Willis in Buenos Aires. We bought Mercosur insurance from them prior to arriving in Argentina which covered us for the region. It was a while ago so our details may be out of date however try gonzalezvibertim@willis.com. If this is out of date check at www.willis.com .

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
