How to Get Vehicle Insurance in Foreign Countries
Hi There,
This is my first post after being recommended by a couple travelling from Singapore to Europe. I'm planning a similar plan next year from Australia to London and finding it tricky to find info about Vehicle Insurance
Are you offered minimum insurance at the border?
Just find a local company on your own before arriving?
Is there a company which will cover world wide?
What are you experiences?
Thanks in advance for your help

I have not heard of 1 company offering insurance for every country. For many countries you purchase the insurance at customs. Though as many will say, they have never used or tried to use the insurance they purchased.
When I purchased the Green Card insurance, the paper tells you which countries it is valid for and Turkey was not included so I purchased at the border.

Hi Maven
third party liability insurance policy is what you will purchase before entering some country or region or you will be usually able to buy one at the border.
Sometimes prices at the border crossing can vary from X to X+ 50/100 % but that's life
We're offering third party liability for EU and from spring we'll be offering from Iran to EU.
Let me know if you have any more questions,
Cheers

Thanks for your replies
My research was kinda coming to a dead end with regards to Vehicle Insurance. Not really possible to setup much at all in advance so was hoping it would be something like you say; which is mostly purchase at the border.
One of those things that will just have to be about getting there and seeing what happens

The cheapest way is to get insurances at the border, or near the border in an insurance office. But sometimes it could be a pain, because they dont sell it on any border, you had to return and so on.
At the border between Bolivia and Peru at Copacobana they would have sent my back without an insurance, at sample.
There are severall options for an worldwide coverage, you can book before you start.
Here i try to collect any informations about worldwide insurances:
4x4tripping: Fahrzeug-Versicherung: weltweite Teil- / Vollkasko / Haftpflicht
All risk insurances looks a bit too high priced - but the normal insurance is worth to consider...

I would disagree because in my experience sometimes the price went up 50 % or even more just because the officer decided it's going to be like that. In Balkans people usually have these situations for example when crossing borders with Bosnia, Serbia, and Turkey also have these symptoms every now and then.
Safe travels

Its a tricky subject, just not enough market out there for a global solution. Thanks for the link Surfy some good info gathered in one place.
The problem is for most people the cost premium is better than nothing. The other side to it is making sure that your travel insurance covers you as best it can for liability etc.
