India to Europe without Carnet!
Has anyone recently purchased an Indian Bike and driven back to Europe via Pakistan, Iran, Turkey etc...
I am aware that I can not technically register an Indian bike in my name in India as I am not an Indian resident. I also believe that I can not get a carnet for an Indian bike. Technically it is not possible however people still undertake this amazing trip home.
I would appreciate any information on peoples experiences of border crossing without carnet and how much it cost (including special donations!)plus any other useful information, contacts of useful officials or general advice anyone may have.
I am currently speaking to others so will update anyone with information as and when I get it.
Many thanks

Why take risks when you can buy the bike in Nepal and legally ride it back?

gnasherwood, you won't have any problems buying the bike and registering it on your name. I've bought a brand new enfield three days after i arrived in india and it took 10 minutes. I have just invented an address, with the complicity of the dealer and that was it. The carnet thing, i don't know, but from what i hear it should be very hard to cross pakistan without one.

I did this trip with another British guy almost a year ago. I've posted several times on the HUBB on the subject - search for my posts to find the relevant threads.
My blog (hosted on HU), although written for a general reader rather than on the technicalities, has some relevant info. See for example our experiences on crossing Pakistan without a carnet:
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/tst...yte/000450.php
Once you've looked through what's already on this site, I'd be happy to answer any further questions (although note that I'm not up to date on anything that may have changed since then). Best email me off-list, since I don't check the HUBB very often now.
Hope your trip works out,
James

India to europe without carnet
James,
Read with interest your article on riding from india to europe, am in Nepal now and thinking of setting off fairly soon, do you have any further info on a document we need from a revenue office in Delhi. How was the pakistan to iran border crossing? We are told from iran everything is easy as we will be in europe, is this correct?
Many thanks in advance
Mark

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
