Are you with the budapest-bamako rally?

It should be possible to buy insurance on the border. Entering Mauritania from Western Sahara at the official crossing near Nouadhibou, you can't miss the person selling insurance, and the border officials should ensure that you visit him.
It's not really insurance. Your chances of making any kind of claim on the policy are 0%. It's just a tax.

Mauritania is not a member of Ecowas, so the Brown Card generally doesn't apply, although as noted above, you can get third party insurance at the border.
Despite that, you can buy a Brown Card in Nouakcott, which then covers you for Mali and the other Ecowas states.

Why should not you be welcome here? We are just bikers.
Set up your tent in the shadow, have a sit, a drink and enjoy the trip.

I have reported the post
Back to insurance - yes you can buy it at the border. When I was there a couple of years ago you didn't have to go looking for it too hard as there was a fair bit of insistence that we should buy it there. We bluffed our way round it by telling them that 'our boss' had arranged all the insurance for us and that the paperwork was in Nouakchott.
After that we managed to find an insurance company not at the border who were (eventually) willing to haggle for the insurance and we got two bikes (a 650 and an 1150) for the price of a 125cc and a pickup (2.8lit) as a 2CV (650cc).
I don't remember the exact figure now, but it was around £15-£20 each.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
