Insurance For The Whole of South America For DR650

Just wondering if someone can assist?

I would like to fully insure my Suzuki DR650 as I'm travelling from Colombia to Buenos Aires in the upcoming six months.

Would someone be able to recommend a few companies I can get some competitive quotations from?

Thanks

Great Question

edenconell,

In Argentina, as a foreign tourist, it is possible to buy vehicle/motorcycle insurance covering you in Argentina and all of the MERCOSUR (trade agreement) countries. The MERCOSUR full member countries are most, but not all, of the countries that border with Argentina. They are Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and of course Argentina

Colombia does not border with Argentina nor is it a full member of MERCOSUR and I have not been able to find an insurance company in Argentina able to sell vehicle/motorcycle insurance for Colombia.

I am not aware of any company anywhere that offers a vehicle/motorcycle coverage for Colombia and Argentina in one policy.

As a foreign tourist you can buy vehicle/motorcycle insurance in Colombia.

I will leave it to others who post here to recommend reliable insurance companies in Colombia.

If you decide to purchase vehicle/motorcycle in Argentina that will cover you in Argentina and, if you request, the above referenced MERCOSUR countries, private message me and I will provide you contact information for a trusted company. Basic liability insurance for a motorcycle costs about $25.00 USD a month.

Most overlanders buy motorcycle insurance in Colombia for Colombia and in Argentina for Argentina and the MERCOSUR countries.

What is your route to Argentina? Through which other countries will you ride?

We organised insurance prior to arriving in Ba when we travelled Argentina.

We used Alessie insurance services: based in the Netherlands.

Not very cheap, but straight forward.

At the time I was more wary of the validity and cover you might get in SA, but now I would be more comfortable buying on arrival, if I had company contacts... So if you decide to get it on the spot once in SA, I'm sure it will also be fine.

Otherwise:

I'm pretty sure it was fully comp, being the paranoid that I am.

IIRR it was about £400 for 3 months. All down via phone and email.

As I said it is not cheap but it gave us peace of mind.

That said, if buying locally is that easy and will protect as fully, my guess is local would also be cheaper and more straight forward: and also in a language local authorities would understand if the need arose (although I was never asked to show mine!).

The only niggle I would have is how things would pan out if I ever needed to claim....
