International driving permit expires abroad

hi all,

I have looked for topic of IDP after one year validation and havent found anything.

my question is:

any idea of what to do if you are travelling in Europe/africa/Asia and your IDP expires?

I would appreciate your help!

NIcolas.

I was under the impression the IDP was purely a legal translation of your valid licence,

someone correct me if I'm wrong

Wink IDP

I cheated, just for a change! and got my sister to get me another one and post it to me:

Nick, it is a separate licence in its own right and has a one year life. However I have also travelled with one that was out of date.

Tiffany, I dont mean to doubt your knowledge but I need to renew my licence next May, as I'm buggering off early I had planned to do all the hoops and hurdles bit for HGV PSV before April and then apply for a International Permit at the same time.
Just checked on our regulations and the permit is valid for 3 years and only in conjunction with your Licence, not a licence in its own right.

Do you have a different one in the UK??

On a side note, make copies of your original license and laminate them.
They are very useful for corrupt cops.
I left one in Honduras and Panama as souvenirs to the local cops who insisted I come pick it up at the police station after paying a silly fine.
An international permit is only a translation of your DL, not a replacement.
It's easy to make a copy and change the dates.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
