International Driving Permit needed

There have been questions posted as to the need for having an International Driving Permit. And I for one was to the point of thinking that it was a waste of money and time. I have normally had one, but not always when driving outside of the USA.
Well it finally happened, met up with a police officer that knew what the law was. Stopped because I seemed to be going too fast, handed him my Washington State drivers license, he looked at it and said this is no good unless you have "International Drivers Permit". That is what the law is and luck would have it this was one of the times I had a current one. So if your thinking that maybe you do not need one you need to know that at least one police officer in South Africa knows what the law is.
Ride on and with a IDP

When driving outside of Canada and the US I've always had an IDL for just that special occasion like you have mentioned. It's cheap and easy to obtain!!

Yup. Once every year or so of riding/driving outside my home country I've really and truly needed an IDP. The other 364 days it's just a joke.

In the US they cost $10 and can be obtained by mail, so I can't understand why people would not get one before planning a trip abroad?

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
