Iran Motorcycle Insurance

I'm in Iran but I didn't see the insurance office at the border and drove on. I'm told if the police stop me the bike will be confiscated. I'm also told that I must buy insurance for one year, which is pricey!

What have others done, or can I get it for 30 days (I'll be unlikely to stay even that).

Cheers, Andrew

In 2009 I was covered by my regular insurance at home. I was stopped by the police a few times, one time for speeding. They never asked to see anything related to insurance. YMMV, but playing dumb usually helps, unless you really are in an accident.

Same for me in 2007. At least back then Iran was a Green Card-country. Don't know if sanctions could have affected this, for example, but something worth checking out. I was never asked for insurance while in Iran.

Hi,
2010, same as the others and no insurance mentioned.

Travel Insurance should have you covered, it was then ( but maybe not now !! ) ..No insurance at the Zhadehan border of any sort..

I was 'at most' asked for passport, or once for "$30 for doing 30km/hr over the limit", no matter as it wasn't paid as I insisted on a reciept. ( this was in the South and it's been known to be dodgy there for 2500+ years, so always ask for a reciept !! ).

Hope you have a great time like I did.

Cheers.
Frank.

Hey Snoopy,

My friend and I just left Iran 3 days ago. We were there for 12 days and didn't get insurance. We were told that there were insurance offices in Tabriz as will as in Astara near the border with Azerbaijan. There definitely wasn't any at Norduz (the border with Armenia) nor at Piranshahr (the northern most border with Iraq). As far as I'm aware (I got my info from an Iranian who runs a tour agency and CDP service so I'm pretty sure its correct) liability insurance is not compulsory so if you want it, its only for your own piece of mind.

We only got stopped once the whole time we were there and it was only because we were riding on the motorway. its illegal there but don't worry, of the 50 or so police radars we ever passed while on the motorways the one cop who did stop us only ended up checking out the bikes. That having been said there are speed traps EVERYWHERE so speed and you more than likely will be caught.

Otherwise enjoy! Also, be warned, the north west is COLD now!

Marty

Hey man,

I bought last year a three months insurance for $53 and got it at the border crossing Dogubayazit - Bazargan. They told us it was also possible to buy it in Tabriz, they never told us where in Tabriz.

Good luck in Iran it's a beautiful country with the best hospitality I have experienced so far.

Cheers Richard

Hi, I used the Sero crossing (southern one) and insurance is only available for one year. It's the same in all local towns. I was quoted $90 USD after haggling for my little 125cc scooter. In the end I didn't bother. In 27 days I wasn't ever asked for anything, including passport.
