leaving China
Anybody ever left China with a Bike registered in China?
What’s the procedure?
I want to go from Shanghai to Hamburg in July and have no idea what to expect at the Border to Kazakhstan, Russia and the EU....
In April 2007 I was refused to leave China to Laos because my bike license was run out of service (12-2006)

Check out Tokyo to London Project They registered two bikes in China as foreigners, and managed to ride all the way to London, on what I presume were the Chinese number plates. At least one photo shows them in Russia with said number plates still on their bike.
Frankly, I don't know how they pulled that off without running the border. Wouldn't the Russian officials go "Hey, you can't ride on a number plate we can't read. You'll have to get Russian import plates before we can let you continue your trip".
If the authors of the website are still around, hopefully they can give you some insight on exactly what to do to pull this off.

Leaving China for SE ASia - I did it.
I took a CHINESE motorcycle out of China and into Laos. The procedure is: there is no procedure. It is total gray-zone. I cannot speak for the north, but I was able to do it by simply getting my passport exit-stamped at the border then casually mentioning "oh, and the bike has to go with me." They put up a big fight about it but then they finally just relented and told me I could never bring the bike back again.
You can see my blog post here. I put up satellite images and more detail.
Also I mention it in my e-book in more detail.
I should mention that I did this in spite of being on a tourist visa, without a license and also not the legal owner of the bike. I think China isn't too uptight about things going OUT. Hope this helps.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
