Mexican Insurance
Planning a trip down to Mexico in the New Year. Looking for the best deal for insurance: over the phone, just prior to the US/Mexico border??? Is one inusurance company better than another?? Any help greatly appreciated.
Merry Xmas!!!

Hi Gaucho,
Having made that mistake once, I decided never again to buy insurance for Mexico. I've been there five times, and found the country safe to drive around in, and consider insurance a waste of money. But this is my idea. You make your own decision.
Before my first visit I bought my policy at an office of the AAA before crossing the border. All their border offices sell short-term insurance. Their rates were competitive. Of course you can shop around in El Paso, for example. But this will cost you some time.

No way I would ride in Mexico without insurance. Ditto for Belize. In Mexico you are guilty until proven innocent, you would probably be alright till you got in an accident. However, if you did get in an accident, you might find yourself in Mexico longer than you want to be. Insurance can be bought over the phone, internet, or at the border. Sanborn's seems to be a popular provider. Do an internet search.
Before my last trip to Belize, I heard that the police had set up a checkpoint near the capital and a had thrown several travellers in jail for lack of insurance. Sure enough, just past the turn for Belmopan on the Western Hwy, I ran into a checkpoint and was asked to had bought some.
But ultimately it is up to you, each of us has our own "comfortable level of risk"

The sentence in the above post that makes no sense, was supposed to read: "I ran into a checkpoint and was asked to produce proof of insurance, I was real glad I had bought some" sorry<g>

DE mark, I would definately agree with you. If you are involved in an accident in Mexico, the authorities will detain everyone until things are sorted out. If you are at fault, you will be detained until you can pay damages to the other party. There is no way I would ride without insurance in Mexico.
I have used Sanborns in the past and they are a reputable company. You can purchase insurance for any amount of time you will be in Mexico. I was on a trip there once and a friend of mine (in a car) was involved in an accident with another car. The Sanborns representative came by the next day and everything was resolved in a couple of hours.

Thanks for the input. We'll probably make arrangements over the phone/internet prior to crossing.

Living in San Diego I go to Baja Mexico often. Unless I'm going to be there for more than a few day's and depending on where I am going I usually Do not buy insurance. My American Insurance policy covers me 75 miles south of the border.(not all companies do this so check your policy.) Having written this; The Mexican Goverment does not reconize American insurance companies. The law in Mexico is that if you are in a accident wether you are at fault or not, If you do not have insurance you will go to JAIL. This happends often with forign tourist. It can take days to months to post a bond. It just depends.
I've owned an Insurance agency for years here in San Diego. I find the best place to purchase Mex Insurance is at the border. It does not pay enough for me to sell it.
It is up to you on what to do. This is how I go to Mex and my professional opinion.
