Morocco Insurance on entry. 3PFT or Fully Comp?

Hi All,

I'm quite new to all this adventure stuff. I saw the long way down and thought it was time to change my boring life.

I took my bike test a year ago and bought a honda Transalp XL650V. I did a quick trip around Ireland as a test and all went well and now it's Morocco for a month...

Anyway, I'm all kitted out and raring to go except for my Morocco insurance and a few questions.

I've got fully comp insurance for all of Europe with super dooper break down cover, etc but they won't insure me for Morocco.

I've done a load of reading on this forum and it seem I can get it when entering. That's ok but I have a few questrions...

Is the insurance I'd get at the border actually worth having? (would they pay up?)

Is it 3rd party or fully comp? If I had a bad crash and was fully comp would they pay up?

I tried calling Carole Nash buit they said they would only insure me for Morocco if I took out a whole policy from them. I've only just bought a years insurance from A-Quote so don't really want to do that... Does anyeone know of any other companies that would just insure me for Morocco for a month...?

My intentions are to go down to Marakesh then take the Tizi'N'Test Pass over the Atlas mountains.

My bike is a Honda Transalp with 180 mile range in the UK. It only takes unleaded, am I going to be able to get unleaded or should I get rid of my exhaust system and replace it with something without the cat? Is that range enough?

Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you adid adventurers soon.

Rich

Take a look here:
Morocco GS Knowledgebase - ::. UKGSer.com .::
Morocco GS Knowledgebase

(Tim Cullis is a regular moderator there; and an old Maroc hand)

"Motorcycle insurance: ideally you should get fully comprehensive green card coverage from your own insurer, however please note that many insurance companies reduce the green card cover from fully comp to third party for the Moroccan part of the trip. Theft of large-capacity bikes isn’t a concern as locals can’t register them or get parts, but you would be liable for own-fault crashes. If you don’t organise insurance in advance you will have to purchase border insurance (third party) when you enter the country. The current rates are something like 60 euros for 2 weeks and 89 euros for 4 weeks."

Probably also answers the unleaded gas question.

Hi Rich

The border insurance is third party. You need insurance cover to be legal. Given the high cost I know some people don't bother but of course they would be 'up the Suwannee' if they had an accident.

Morocco changed over to unleaded fuel a few weeks ago.

Excellent, thanks for the information chaps. I'll get the insurance at the border and just try extra hard not to crash! It's good to hear that bike theft is not a big concern and that their fuel is now unleaded...

I'll report back upon my return regarding how it went...

Thanks Guys

Getting to Fnideq...

Hi Tim,

I've just been reading your Morocco GS Knowledgebase and it's fantastic. Thank you thank you thank you!

It looks like I'll be getting my insurance from Fnideq if I can't get it sooner. Does this mean I have to leave my bike at the port and go get the insurance or would they let me ride there to get the insurance?

Stupid questions I know but first timer...!

Thanks again Tim

My insurance company (Carol nash) issued a green card (£18) prior to leaving. No problems at the border at all.

Hi BrianR,

Thanks for the response,

I've already tried Carol Nash but they told me that to insure me for Morocco I'd have to take out an entire years policy for the UK, then add Morocco to it. As I've just secured a decent policy for a years insurance with A-Quote for £200 including Europe and breakdown cover I thought it wasn't the best idea.

I'll just get it at the border, or at Fnideq if it's not available at Ceuta.

Thanks again Brian.

Kindest regards
Rich

Info for others - Norwich Union (or a policy underwritten by them) will also add 3rd party liability 'green card' cover to your existing policy before you leave the UK, making things very straightforward.

Alternatively (primarily for riders/drivers with vehicles registered outside the EU) Arisa* offer Green Card insurance for the whole of Europe for around €22 a month, and this included Morocco when I took out a policy with them last year...

As Tim says, unleaded is widely available in Morocco - certainly any 'service station' will have it...

*Search the 'here's where you get the cheap EU insurance' thread...
