It can be done, yes. I have done it myself.
It is not easy. The 3rd party insurance that you are talking about through Knopf tours is only for countries excluding the country that the bike is registered in. So if you by a bike in the UK you must still get UK 3rd party insurance to cover it in the UK. To get that insurance you MUST have a British license and to get the British license you must have either a British passport or a work permit. Plus the process of getting the license/buying and registering the bike, insuring the bike and takes min 4-6 weeks - making it infeasible for a trip of less than 6 months.

If anyone can find a British insurer that will insure a bike for someone with a non-EU license for less than 1/4 of the value of the bike, per annum... I will ride to their house when I get back to the UK in November and buy them a !
