I've been in a slightly different situation; travelled with my goddaughter from NZ around Africa this winter, she was 12 and is currently living with me in France (strict formalities for kids here).
Basically I had a letter from both her parents (divorced) giving me full responsibility (including medical) for her and that they gave their consent for her to go wherever I did.
We never needed to show it, luckily I didn't need to sign any medical forms & she was as fit as a fiddle.
Unless you have a custodial problem between parents (not being nosey) I wouldn't bother with paying a solicitor.
Have fun!
