Quick reply needed re. insurance!
To cut a long story short, my current U.K. insurance will run out in January whilst I plan to be in South America but I don't intend to come back until April/May time. I know I won't be covered by the insurance anyway, but do I need to prove I have it whilst I am in South America? Is it o.k. to drive around totally uninsured? Due to the long story I haven't bored you with, I need to know in the next couple of days, so if anyone knows the answer please let me know asap.
Thanks

Insurance? Whazzat? In South America?
Susan insisted we try in Argentina, thinking it was a civilised, modern country.
Wrong. Not possible, no matter what. And nobody cares either. Forget it for South America. Any country (worldwide) that does care will require it at the border, and you can pay there. In most, don't look in the garbage bins around back, where all the other foreigners insurance papers are stored...
Generally, real insurance is needed in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and...hmmm, help me out here somebody!

Hi
FYI, Alexander Forbes declined to quote for insuring my BMW against theft on a UK to Aus trip. No specific reason given.

Just to add to Grant's list, Japan and South Korea require "real" liability insurance as well.

Sean, I would try writing to Stephen Hodson (hodsons@aforbes.co.uk) personally to see what response you get, especially since he's posted about 18 'subtle' ads for their services in the HUBB.

One of the greatest hang-ups of Westerners is to be insured from cradle to grave. We as "adventure motorcycle travellers" ought to bug this hang-up. Let's thump our collective noses at our overinsured fellow citizens, the wimps.

Hi Werner
Take your point, my insurance is even insured.
But if a bike got stolen any insurance pay off has got to help with the remaining carnet liability, which in my case could be up to 500% of the bike value!
Anyway Susan, I'll email this gentleman and post any response.

Hi Sean,
You don't need to insure your carnet-deposit in case of theft. If you have a police-report about the theft, your deposit is safe.
You might want to check this with the carnet-isuing company, but I am pretty sure about it.
Hope this helps (to save a bundle)

Hi all
Pertinent extract of the reply from Stephen Hodson:
"...approached the underwriter on your behalf and was informed that the previous experience involving overland motorcycle policies had not been favourable, and as a consequence the underwriter was no longer prepared to underwrite a policy of this nature.
I am sorry that we could not be of assistance to you on this occasion but if you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me..."
Makes you wonder what sort of business they expect to generate from an overland motorcycle website!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
