S-Africa insurance requirements
What are the insurance requirements in South Africa? I've come to understand that third party insurance is covered by purchase of fuel. Is this true? Does this also include foreign riders on foreign bikes? Also, how does this work... do I need to obtain some kind of proof when purchasing fuel, like a receipt or the likes? Lastly, besides this third party insurance aqcuired at fuel stations, are there any other insurance requirements that are obligatory for foreign riders? I have a Norwegian travvelers insurance policy which will cover my ass (unlimited) in case of an accident, and a limited coverage for my stuff, but thats about it.
We will be shipping our bikes into Cape Town by air, hence we will not cross any "borders" where insurance can be obtained, and will be uninsured when leaving the airport (unless insurance can be acquired there, or if the fuel third party insurance is enough). Any reccomendations or comments regarding this issue would be highly appreciated. We are leaving June 7.th, and will be riding directly from the Airport in Cape Town to Nairobi (only stopping to fuel, sleep, eat, etc., and no hanging about). We are therefore in a hurry.

Had me wondering
Wheelie, I have to admit I read your post and couldn't help a 'say what???'
I drove around in Saffa land for years and, despite not having been back in the last couple, I have family there and had no idea you could get 3rd party insurance when you fill up. But, there it is, after a Google search, on some 'foreign' sites promoting S.African tourism:
"All those without a South African licence must carry an International Driving Permit. Third party insurance is included in the price of the fuel (Note that this is third party personal liability insurance and not ‘Balance of third party’ which covers damage to other vehicle(s)). "
I remain dubious. Checking with the AA in SA would clear this up, and, if you are affiliated to the AA locally, and tell them you intend to travel overland through the beautiful country, there is a good chance that they'll also throw in some maps and some info on areas of interest along your route.
The Automobile Association of South Africa – AA (tel: (011) 799 1000; fax: (011) 799 1010; website: www.aasa.co.za; PO Box 31612, Braamfontein 2017, South Africa.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
