South America - 2 US Bikes registered to one Rider
Hi,
I'm planning a S to N trip through S America starting in Puerto Natales 3/15/15 and reaching Cartagena 5/31/15 or later (CHI-ARG-BOL-PER-ECU-COL). I'll likely continue across the Darien Gap and Bike #2 would be shipped to Houston TX.
I'm planning the trip in 2 week segments between major airports with the hope of getting US riding friends to relay ride the second bike. Here are some paperwork questions (please list # being answered in your reply, thanks!)
#1. Should I get a Carnet for ease of import even though it's not mandatory? I do plan on getting an international driver's permit.
#2. Plan A: If both bikes (650GS or equiv) are Vermont titled/registered in my name is there any way 2 friends could receive the bikes in Santiago and ride them to Puerto Natales without me? Could I add one of their names to the title and TVIP alongside mine? How much time should be assumed in Santiago to get the paperwork complete or could they be riding to Puerto Montt while it gets processed and before they need to cross to Argentina?
#3. Plan B: I may rent a truck in Santiago and haul the bikes to Puerto Natales. Non rider friends would then drive the 'support' truck back to Santiago in a 2 week section. Any concern crossing ARG-CHI border with trailered bikes?
#4. Will there be any issues at border crossings if I'm always present with the bikes and my riding partner has a notarized letter that I've given him permission to ride the bike I own? What about the fact my partner would be riding point to point (ie suspicion due to non round trip)?
#5. Anything I'm not considering? For example, I'm assuming since insurance is applied to the bike, each rider wouldn't need to get new insurance.
I'm likely nuts to think this relay riding would work. I'll ask for feedback on repairs, routes, etc in another thread! Thanks all!
