Tax on UK motorbike returning under carnet?

Hi All,

After a painfull run in with Australian pen pushers...
http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000330.html
Who in the end agreed to give me an import permit, but the costs are just too great so...

I have decided to send my beloved KTM back to the UK.

When I left the UK in Sept 2001, I purchased the bike from new and as it was leaving the country (and EU) within six months, I did not have to pay VAT (Great! -17.5%!). I have since travelled to Australia and extended the Carnet once, but the time comes to return.

I'm trying to find out if I am liable for any import duty on return. The bike is 2 years old and has 15K miles on the clock, has uk plates and is returning under the carnet.

I will be sending it to a friend who will sell it for me but I intend to stay in Australia (where I am resident).

Thoughts/Views?

Regards
James

That should read 'Am I liable for Import Duty AND/OR VAT'?

The answer should now read...

YES I am liable for VAT (17.5%) on the current value of the vehicle... but there is no import duty...

So to a new plan... Apparently if I can find a buyer in NZ, I can ship it to New Zealand, pay import duty (12.5%) and sell it there? More investigation required... This is SOOO painful...

Regards
James

Try Dave Shand in NZ. His e-mail is shanddave8@hotmail.com. He owns a shop in Dunedin and may be in the market or know somebody. I don't remember if he sells KTM. I've only met and been in his shop once when I was traveling in NZ last January.

You could also try posting on the Travel Bikes for Sale/Wanted, make sure you note in the Subject line that the bike will be in New Zealand.

One other option, maybe not realistic depending on where in Australia you are. Can you take the bike out to Indonesia, then bring it back into Australia without using the carnet?

Thanks Susan,

I'll give that a go. I've spoken with a dealer there who might be able to help, thing is it has to go B 4 the end of the month...

Thank to rocket ron - only problem being Dunedin is really far south and shipping costs will be prohibitive - but I'll send a mail anyway...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
