buying a bike in usa

Does anyone know if its possible for a UK citizen to purchase and insure a bike in the USA as opposed to shipping one out there if so what are the pros and cons

It's extremely possible. I'm considering doing this myself if I can find a cheap place with a garage to build the bike over a month or so.

The bikes are a LOT cheaper there (than aus), for example a 2013 dr650 with zero kilometres can be bought for $5,500Au, here the same bike is $7,500Au.

Parts / Mods are a lot cheaper. It's USA, the land of 'do everything bigger and better', and damn do they do it well.

Registering the bike is very easy depending on what state your in. Search the forums here, theres a thread about 6 pages long with which states are easy / cheap.

The only con I can see is you need a base to work on / build the bike, which is my issue. But in the big scheme of things that's nothing really.

Good luck!

I have a BMW gs1200 for sale in September in Boston, MA.
I can get it to anywhere in New England for you to see. I bought it in San Francisco and have ridden it across US. Tarmac only. It's done 50k and is 2 years old.

With all the other details you need to think about it seems to me hat having a bike peeped and ready to go will be a great option. I wish I had that luxury. Storage here in the US is ridiculously cheap so all you have to do is open the garage and ride.
Two new tyres fitted yesterday at BMW and a thorough check over by the service team. All is well.
This two year old bike is low cost because it has 50k on the clock but it is like new.
If you sende a personal message I will send photos and more

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
