Freighting a bike: Europe to SE Asia?
Hello, I´m trying to help out a friend send his old GS from Europe to SE Asia (he plans to ride Thailand/Malaysia, maybe Cambodia and Laos as well. He needs to send this bike, he cannot rent or buy there, because the bike has some major modifications for him (he has leg injuries from an older crash).
Now his plan is to send by seafreight to Singapore. But it appears he´ll need a carnet to do that. And I´ve understood, that Singapore has some other difficulties as well, like insurance.. OR, could he arrange sending the crate to Johor Bahru Malaysia, so he won´t have to get the bike legal in Singapore? Anybody sent a bike to Singapore by sea recently, and how was your experience?
Then there´s Port Klang Malaysia, that almost always seems to get pretty good feedback, in fact I thought about sending there once (I ended up sending by air to Bangkok, though). Anybody sent a bike to Pt. Klang by sea recently, and how was your experience? Furthermore, was a carnet needed or not? I´ve crossed via land border from Thailand, and then it was not needed, but this was years ago in 2008, and anyway sending in as freight could be different. Shipping database came up with only 1 shipment to Pt.Klang, so asking for more experiences.
If I was him, in fact I´d seriously consider sending by airfreight to Bangkok (for one thing, he should not need a carnet for that), although for now, he seems to want to do it by sea.... but just out of interest, has anybody sent a bike by air to BKK recently (or Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore for that matter), and how did that work out? Thank you in advance! Pekka
