How to bypass Ethiopia coming from Iran?

Hey all,

We are on our way from Berlin to Capetown on the eastern route. Currently in Albania, heading for Turkey. Since the situation in Ethiopia seems to deteriorate, (according to friends who live there) we are already trying to find a way to bypass Ethiopia by ship.

We are looking for roll-on roll-off (RORO)
FROM: Sudan / Oman / Emirates
TO: Kenya / Tanzania

We are pretty flexible concerning the departure and arrival harbor. As long as one is on the route before Ethiopia and the destination is in East Africa. Does anyone know of RORO options in the region? Have you shipped there before? Do you know a company who does it?

We will have a Carnet de Passages by then. Our truck is an old MB 1222: 10 t / 8,9 m long / 3,6 m high.

We are grateful for any hint.
Cheers
Julian

For all those following and with similar travel plans: we have done some more research and spoken to friends in the region or friends with contacts in the region and have now decided to try and ship directly from Southern Europe to East Africa. According to our information, Iran had opened some of its border posts over the last months, but that was true only for locals. Tourist visas are still not issued (generally, there might be exceptions) due to Covid and our contacts expect it to be unlikely that that will change any time soon. Also, we hear that the conflict in Ethiopia is currently more likely to intensify and expand... Therefore, we're now looking into RoRo shipping options from Greece/Turkey/Italy to Mombasa.

What did you find?

I'll also be trying to do this in a couple months. I'm willing to ship a bike from Greece or Turkey (or that area) or even air freight it, to Kenya. Any info would be helpful.

Thanks

Jack

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
