I work in Container Shipping - Advice
Hi Guys,
Im not here to promote my company - just want to help with any advice. I work for one of the largest container shipping companies in the world. I know alot about the industry and willing to answer any questions I can for my fellow bikers!
Alot of the time, it is better to get your rates direct from the shipping line. Although some of the big boys don't arrange the customs' clearence, but you can use this to your advantage when speaking with a forwarding agent - for instance 'So and So Line can offer me x amount!' and they will tend to match it. In this current finanicial climate, rates all around the world are plummating due to the lack of import/exports.

Hi - I wonder if you could advise me on the following; I intend to carry my bike in a truck (ex-Russian army) as part of a RTW trip. The truck is just a little too large to fit in a container and I would need to ship it from East Australia to South America i.e Sydney-Valparaiso. My question is, is it feasible to ship it between these two ports and expect it to arrive intact if at all? What would be the best way to go about it?

That is not good .. best if it does fit in a container .. they make high containers too .. I forget how much higher .. But things are now set up for containers around the world .. if it is not in a container they charge extra .. lots extra!

Crating Questions

Thanks for the offer of advice . I think that I have located shipper I will use but have a question on crating: was advised that it had to be "heat treated" lumber (I assume to prevent transport of bugs). I will use Kiln Dried lumber but need to know if plywood is approved for use? is it considered heat treated? Also can I close it all up or will customs need to inspect first?

Just to let you know, I am working through your questions ASAP and will get round to answering them all. Im just slightly overwelmed by the response at the moment! ;-)

I doubt that any shipping lines do an Australia to S America run, just not enough trade. The RoRo ships definitely dont do anything like that.
For trucks its really only feasible to use RoRo ships as they dont fit width wise in a container, and if you have it on a flat/rack its just as open as a RoRo, and you pay through the nose for top loading. Top loading also increases the risk of damage as your flat/rack has to be offloaded to access the containers below.
The RoRo routes ex East Australia are generally via Singapore, then a lot of Asian ports to pickup vehicles bound for the USA ex Thailand, Korea, Taiwan, China, Japan. Then over to the USA/Canada, down the West Coast of the Americas. I'd expect your truck to be off loaded at least twice and put onto another ship, probably in Singapore and then in the USA or Mexico.
Security of items on RoRo ships and the ports has improved out of sight in the last 10 years. But if the items are not locked away, bolted down and secured then you take a small risk of something being stolen.
How long?.....3 months maybe.

That's what I imagined except that I hope I might be able to ship via Singapore then from there to Chile direct.
I am carrying a bike in my truck and would fly that to Chile, head South and mooch around then head back up through Patagonia and meet up with what's left of my truck after shipping!

Hi, I am in Bikaner, Rajastan at the moment, heading south to Mumbai, and maybe Goa middle desember. I want to send the Geezer (GS Basic) home, either by sea or air. I have been told Mathew Dias is the man to contact in Goa. Does any one have any experience/advice to help do this with a minimum of costs and frustration?
Because the bike needs an overhaul, and winter in Norway, I can wait a while before it arrives by ship, but I would like to see it again.
All info is appreciated.
