Shipping from Spain to the US

Hi all,

At the end of this month I will ship my bike from Madrid to Seattle.
My agent in Madrid tells me that a temporary export of the bike is impossible or very difficult.
They say I have two options:
1.Definitive export of the bike, so when I return after 6 or 7 months I will have to pay 16% tax which I already did when I bought the bike
2. Getting a Carnet ATA, this means I would have to keep 40% of the value of my R1150GS in a bank during the trip.

I think a temporary export should be possible. Any helpful experiences or advice.
