personal belongings with bike syd/uk.

hi there bike fans.. im hoping for a bit of shared knowledge, is it a hassle to ship most of my personal effects when i ship my bike from sydney to uk... or will this unnecessarily complicate matters.

im not willing to use an agent when clearing my goods out of customs at the tilbury docks, is there anything else i have to look out for when doing this myself.
thanks...phil.

Phil,

Assuming you're crating the bike, you can just put your personal belongings in the crate and it shouldn't create any problems.

Can't help you with Tilbury docks I'm afraid. My experience of UK customs in Southampton was not too good - it took two weeks to clear our bikes, but customs were a bit confused by someone shipping British bikes back home - they wanted us to temporarily import them for some reason.

Harvey

Hi Phil, If you have a decent crate that nobody can get into there should be no problem with including your personel effects.
I shipped my Canadian registered bike into Tilbury April,2002, and included riding gear in the crate. The agents messed things up and I ended up walking into the docks (which might not be so easy now) and personally clearing the bike through customs. I just had an itemized list of the crates contents. Customs never even saw the crate...

Hi Phil,
I can only agree with Cameron above. I shipped into Tilbury and cleared customs myself about eight weeks ago. I shipped back from Sydney and my crate contained my UK registered XT 600 and all my riding gear, camping gear and lots of other stuff too. Nobody from Customs even looked at the crate, only my packing list, and the whole clearing process took less than two hours, and with, surprise surprise !! friendly AND helpful people.
Still wish I hadn’t come home though

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
