Shipping Air or Ship Australia to Asia
Anyone suggestions on who to use for a good freight rate from Australia.
Perkins in Darwin quoted $450 to ship it to Singapore and its $150 to clear it. But I have been warned that there can be problems in Singapore with clearance. Anyone heard stories ???
The cheapest air freight quote I got was $1700.
I want to be in Asia for 3rd week in March to head up through Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, China, Russia then over to Europe / UK by July / August
Anyone else going that way ???

If your air quote is ex Adelaide, then it could roughly be in the ballpark(depending on airline, it might even be routed via Melbourne or Sydney).
I´ve also heard that temporary import to Singapore could be a bit of a problem compared to Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, for example, but have no further info on that (except that Bangkok airport was easy, when I took my bike there 2 years ago). But you may find more by searching this forum and others.
Regarding your plan, might also be a good idea to do some more research on the requirements, and costs, of entering and crossing Vietnam & China with your foreign-registered motorcycle (some quite recent info on Vietnam can be found at gt-rider dot com forums).

Kangaaussie, did Brisbane/Singapore not too long ago with Qantas, $875 +$140 for the dangerous goods certificate.Piece of cake, very efficient but phone ahead 5 days and book. Check with Qantas that you have been quoted the correct rate per kg, over 100 kg attracts a lower charge. In Singapore the best way to do it is to get Helmann to clear your bike, the cargo terminal is a big bugger of a place and you can go round in circles if you don't know the system.The day before get intouch with BIKEBULANCE and arrange to meet them at the depot as soon as you get the bike out of the terminal.Your Aussie mobile will work in Singapore, just get a new sim at any seven/eleven.They will meet you and will take you to Woodlands Customs, from there you just drive over to Johor Bahru.They have a very good van and it makes it all easy. Johor Bahru Immigration and customs is a construction site and can be a bit difficult but the people working there are very helpful, just smile and ask for assistance, works wonders. In Johor Bahru, get onto Malaysian AA they will sell you CTP insurance for about $30 for a year. If you need any more info drop me a PM. John.

Excellent info, John. I wish we had known about Bikebulance before shipping to SIN, would have saved us a lot of trouble and expense.
I would still advise to check out freight to KL, as it's a breeze there.
For SIN you need a carnet. In theory you need one for MAL, too. Not sure what will happen if you arrive without one. Leaving without carnet wasn't a big problem for us.
With regards to China you better search on HUBB before setting out. We paid 6210 Euro each for 45 days to cross Tibet & Yunnan.
Vietnam is about half way down this page: The Golden Triangle Rider :: Successful Entry into Vietnam!!! 4500$ for 21 days...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
