Shipping car South-Africa to Australia

Hello,

We're looking into shipping our car from Sout-Africa to Australia.
We know that it's almost impossible to get a car in Australia, as you have to take him apart and clean him with a toothbrush, but we still wanna have a look into it as we're attached to our car

Anyone any information?
Anyone ever tried?

Thanks!
Eef

I took a bike there temporarily in 2008.

But do note this:

(An old bus, driven all the way from Finland, was rejected by AQIS, even after a huge cleaning operation, and they had to hire another bus to travel in Oz)

Yes true, needs to be very clean. You will also need a carnet obviously and an Vehicle import Approval which can be applied for athttp://www.infrastructure.gov.au/ Also expect a large import/duties fee at port. I'm using Tradelanes to ship my bike from Melbourne to Cape Town this year. Stewart is really helpful and is always fast to reply.stewart@tradelanes.com.au They can help on import/export conditions, prices etc. good luck

Scratching my head here... when you use carnet, you should not have to pay any import taxes and duties, right? (At least I did not have to pay any such things, but at that time, carnet was not mandatory for Oz, like it is now).

BTW, I used Tradelanes to ship by sea back o Europe after the trip, I´d say they ´re highly recommended. Payed 700 euros (total) to get the bike back home, so the price was certainly good. The shipment arrived about 3 weeks later than original ETA, but that was probably something completely out of their hands (if you ship by sea, prepare for delays).

the price would be included within your 700 euro. Shipping to europe or back is only actually about $400 for the actual space on the boat, the rest goes to import taxes.

You should pay import taxes and duties, when you import a vehicle permanently into the country. You should not have to pay, if you only import it temporarily, either using carnet, or some other temporary import document. Note the difference between permanent and temporary imports.

And I definitely did not pay any import taxes, when my bike returned to Europe to the country, where it had left from 6 months earlier, and where it was registered all the time. I did pay some port handling fees, though.

Sorry, port handling fees I was referring to. not import fees. On my quote from trade lanes they estimated $600 for my bike when bringing it back into Australia for port, customs and quarantine fees. I don't know if thats excessive, but knowing how much a costs here, it wouldn't surprise me.
