Shipping from Kenya to India
Does anyone know about weather that route is available? I have to ride my R80 GS from Cape Town to Nairobi and I was wondering if I can ride India, Pakistan, etc instead of Sudan, Etiopia, etc.
Thanks

Good website. Where are you now? I am thinking leaving Cape Town by 15th November and arriving Nairobi by 15th December. The inverse way took me two months but I didn´t take the straightest way. I went to Zimbabwe, Bostwana and Namibia. This time I wanna go straight north through Mozambique and Tanzania, so one month should be enough. When do you think you will be in Kenya?

Hi Miquel, when I was in Nairobi 2 buddies of mine rode their bikes to Mombasa and put them on a RoRo to Mumbai. They returned to Nairobi by minibus or taxi and had no problems. They then flew to India and picked up their bikes there. Their site is Mike & John's Explorations. They are great guys and I'm sure they will give you more information if you need it. Safe trip. Hook.

Miquel, I'm in the U.S. now, I'm thinking a year or two ahead with the shipping from Africa to India. Good luck & enjoy on your ride north ~~

Hi. I have been a regular reader here, but this is my first post.
I am also considering shipping my GS from Jeddah to Bangalore to do a trip in India, however, I am also eager to hear from somebody first-hand who has already done it.
From my own enquires, I found if you want to take a bike into India for TEMPORARY USE ONLY, then you are allowed to keep it in India for a maximum period of 6 months (can be extended to 1 year). But beware during these 6 months you can not leave the country without taking your bike with you. Visit the link below for more details:
EXEMPTION TO CERTAIN VEHICLES IMPORTED BY TOURISTS* UNDER TRIPTYQUE OR CARNET DE PASSAGE
Cost for temporary import:
Since there wont be custom duties for temporary import, in India I gather the local clearing charges (inbound) and forwarding charges (outbound) will total about Rs. 15,000 (US$ 325).

Hallo,
A bit late...
On November 2009 I had flyed my bike from Nairobi Kenya to Mombai India, using KenyaAir cargo. The totla price was about 750$ and my ticket 350$, so not so bad. Ask Chris at JJ's for the agent ditails, and other logistics like crating, and transporting the bike to Jomo Kenyata Airport.
Clearing in India is a bit complicated; takes about 3 days, and cost minimum of 300$...
Cheers,
Adam
