Question Shipping by sea from the Bay Area, CA ??!?!?

After consulting with two freight forwarding agents it appears that it is now impossible to ship bikes by sea from the Bay Area, CA. Instaead, you have to take the bike, its paperwork and its container to Los Angles and do all the worh there.

I shipped my bike in 2005 to South America from South San Francisco with no problems at all and am trying to do the same now.

Has anyone else encountered this new regulation/hassle and found a way around it (other than shipping the bike as "parts"?)

I find it hard to believe that you cant send a bike from the Bay Area, a metropolis of eight million people...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adam

OK, here I am replying to my own post...

I have priced shipping a shipping container from SFO to Santiago for $2200 (20'x8'x8') Two more bikes makes the shipping costs reasonable as I have two bikes that need to go...

Is anyone else interested in sharing a container? Schedule to arrive in SA Dec. first-ish... I have picked up a bike in Santiago before, I can help you through the "process"

No crating necessary if you have your own container, just strap 'em down

If this doesnt work I will be driving a crate containing two bikes to Los Angles, 500 miles away

thanks

Adam

Bay Area to Santiago

Hey I'm sorry I can't help you split the cost this time, but a few friends of mine and I are planning a trip down to South America in March 07 and we are having problems figuring out how to get our bikes sent down there, in a safe, relatively easy and inexpsensive way. I read your post and was wondering if you could give me some advice on where to start and what to expect. Any information will help. Thanks,

Cory

Shipping to SAmerica

Greetings.. Cory and others...have you found a suitable shipping co to ship bikes to SA? I am trying to get my KTM950 shipped to anywhere in SAmerica.
I am in San Diego currently and was leaving very soon in my RV for long drive to Panama.

I am looking for someone to assist me in getting my bike shipped. For a fee of course.

Please call me if you are still looking into doing this.

Shipping to So. America

Adam:

My wife and are are planning on shipping our BMW1150GSA to South America. We would like to have it there in Oct. of 2007. I am currently looking into air freight as it seems that it may be easier to control and make sure the bike is there when you get there. I am currently looking at having it air freighted to Lima but could possibley change that to Quito or Santiago. We are in Sacramento but can get the bike to San Francisco area. If you do get the container and find that it will arrive in so. America in the Oct. time frame I would be interested in splitting the cost with you. Let me know.
