triumph T140V Questions

Hello. How do I check the crankcase oil on my 76 T140V or do I just maintain a certain level in the frame?
How do I check the level of the gearbox oil? I cannot even see oil in the gearbox. Where should the oil level be in the gearbox? Thanks.

Hi The Silver Jubilee model was 1977, from memory I think Mollydog is correct, and under the gearbox there is a small bolt within a bolt for checking the g/box level, make sure the bike is level or on its centre stand. There is a 2nd bolt in the gearbox underside DO NOT REMOVE as this is the hydraulic plunger that locates in the Gearbox quadrant that selects gears and removing this one by mistake can lead to 'gear loss', between the crankcase and outer case cover(left hand side) there are about 3 small holes that allow a small amount of oil through to keep the primary side lubricated. I am at work at present so dont have my old Bonnie manual to hand. If you get into any trouble don't hesitate to get back and post.
As said, this is stretching my memory back 29 years!

oil tank

If the oil level is right in the tank the sump will look after itself, the same goes for the primary chain case which is self levelling from the sump.
The gearbox drain plug has another bolt in the middle of it which when removed should drip a little oil if the level is correct, when changing the gear oil a 500cc bottle should be just about the right amount for refill.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
