Forum access via smartphones
Hello,
I found a very cool app for the iPhone (which also works with most other smartphones) that allows very easy access to forums. It make reading, searching and replying to messages a breeze.
It also has a free plugin for forum administrators.
I was wondering if it would be possible to activate this feature on the HU forum as I think it would be a great benefit to all travellers for keeping in touch with HU stuff.
The app is called Tapatalk and their web site is Tapatalk - Forum App on the iPhone, Android, Nokia, and BlackBerry for vBulletin, phpBB, IPBoard, and SMF
Thanks
Paul

Very interesting- we'll have a close look at it asap and see what we can do.
Thanks!

it's a very handy program... however, as we found out on my home forum, they have access to what you type (ie the posted from tapatalk.com added in your posts)
the owner of my other forum wasn't thrilled about this as it, according to him, created some security issues (probably more annoyances) just fyi

I use an HTC Desire smartphone which has a large screen and have full access to HUBB and other Internet sites.
I've tried mobile versions of eBay and other sites and end up going back to the 'full' version.

Hi,
We're currently upgrading the ENTIRE site - well almost - latest version of vB 3.8.x and Drupal 6, and a completely new connector for the two so you get single-sign. Then we have a new "look and feel" design in the works, then a few more things. Somewhere in there we may get tapatalk or similar in. Last time I looked at it however I wasn't completely convinced - there are issues. Unfortunately I don't remember what they were!
The security issues mentioned below may have been part of it. We are VERY security and Privacy conscious - that IS Susan's expertise.
What's the latest info on it? Security issues? Give me links to good info so I can read up on it easily and we'll see.
Please understand there are a million things I want/NEED to do on the site - and I'm stupidly overloaded already, and it just all takes time- lots of it. We could use a couple of volunteer coders too.
cheers Grant

Hi Grant
I am unsure of any security issues, but considering we may just want to read posts while on the road, I cannot see any great concerns.
As for what I write here, it is an open forum and the only privacy issues that may have a bearing is maybe the private messages that are sent via this app.
It would be a useful addition and is a free app
Please reconsider
Cheers

Yep, can appreciate concerns, but I don't participate and use the hubb as much as other forums, because it's not tapatalk enabled, and I miss out when on the road.

With the increased use of smartphones, it may be a good idea to look into some sort of compatibility in the near future. Navigating a screen intended for a computer display on the small display of a phone a real pain.
Browse the HUBB in a tent on those rainy days when you just don't wanna get on the road.

Yes - we're looking at all of this. New design in the works, which will have a mobile "style" for use on smartphones etc. (NOTE: maybe not immediately - more important to get it working first, but mobile is very high on the list. Susan does a LOT of browsing on her phone!)
Tapatalk - yes. this year.
Again, other stuff comes first.
We hear you!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
