I just noticed this thread.... I'm a software programmer and a web designer by trade and would be glad to help or answer any questions.
Fireboomer, if you decide on which software you want to use I’ll be glad to help you set it up. This includes any Nuke portal software you like.
I’m testing postnuke right now at http://www.shortwheelbase.com/portal . Check it out. If any of you want administrative access to try out the admin features let me know.
I also run my own hosting facility www.111virtual.com . We do not sell to end-users but I’ll make exceptions to this board members and will give you a good deal. It includes everything you might need, including PHP and MySQL.

He AB,
Whow, that's a very nice offer. Quite daring too if you would know how much I know about the internet.
Took a look at your website. Pff, stylish one.
Wich software I want to use... As far as I know I think that MT will do. PHP might be better, but just seems way to complex for me. Think this would be a bit of an overkill.
Just want it to be a bit more easier to update the website with roadbooks, photo's, info,... I would also like to update info from on the road (read any cybercafe with a decent connection).
I thought I could do all this with MT.
I already downloaded the MT software. I use fetch to upload the stuff. I read the instructions about 3 times, still don't get it to work. Keep getting 403 error at first trial. But seems that you need to set fetch to 'text-mode' to upload some parts of the software. So gonna try that first.
Do you think you can help me out? Would you need to get acces to the server?

It seems that we have wandered well and truly off the original track... so I'm going to close this thread. For more in this vein feel free to post a new thread here in this forum.
Here's my summary:
For people who have the time and inclination to create their own site, and maintain it - AB or Frank have both made great offers of free? services.
For someone wanting a simple travellers story with pics which can be easily updated from the road, MT works well. Susan did a superb job of completely rewriting the MT users manual for our blog users to make it MUCH simpler to use and understand than the original MT manual, which is far too techie for most users.
For the average person our MT blog setup is simple and easy to use, and it's free. Most importantly, you'll get more hits if you're here than anywhere else!
See our Travellers Stories section for more info on how to get your own blog.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
