How do you insure Aussie bike for UK trip
Hi All,
Firstly I'm so pleased to have been introduced to Horizons. Great site.
I have a question. Hubby and I are travelling to the UK later this year and have already got a quote to ship BMW from Aus to UK with James Cargo.
Our problem is how the heck do you get legal motorbike insurance whilst riding overseas? we've already contacted Carole Nash and Bennetts who say they sympathise with us but cannot help as the bike is not registered there. Our insurer here is Australia has no idea how we can do it.
Hoping there are some out there who have already done this or know where to go.
Cheers,
Julie

maybe some clues at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...et-cheap-34822
Have heard of problems trying to get insurance in the UK, especially without a local address and a clean UK driving record for the last couple of years. Then if you want to tour Europe as well, that adds a layer of complexity.
Might be better aiming for Europe and getting their green card. ADAC is the major roadside service provider and covers Europe and beyond. Memebership costs about 100 euro and provides far more than basic breakdown cover. Need a europe address though for postage. They provide insurance and carnets as well

+1 Tony's reply.
Insuring the bike comprehensively will be very hard, however the ADAC green card will provide the legal minimum insurance across the green card zone (Eire to the Russian Far East).
If you are desperate to insure the bike comprehensively it seems the only route is to get it registered in the UK, pay the VAT and all the other bits n pieces that may get thrown at you. The UK will be easiest to get the bike to pass an MOT - plus you can understand most of the population - Left hand drive countries will probably demand that the headlamp lense is changed (beam benders maybe allowed, not sure - you'll need them if you goto Europe anyway). There might be other niggling things as well - maybe someone at BMW in Germany can help with compliance issues and tell you what parts are included in the UK and Australian bikes.
Expect the registration process to occupy a lot of time - maybe weeks if you don't have every bloody piece of paper they want.
Personally I'd buy a bike in Europe and save the heartache.

I have asked insurers here about insuring bikes coming to Australia.. there response is that it is too expensive and people don't do more than the basic minimum insurance.
So ... the realistic choices are ..
minimum insurance on your bike there (and pay for transport)
OR
buy a bike there and insure that
In both cases take documents to prove your past insurance history.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
