Bordercrossing Vietnam-Cambodja possible with Vietnam-registered motorbike?
Bordercrossing Vietnam-Cambodja possible with Vietnam-registered motorbike?
Hello,
This is Luc Christiaens from Belgium. I bought a Honda Win 110, with Vietnam numberplate, that I am driving down from Hanoi to Saigon. I am considering to drive the bike further into Cambodja. Does anybody has experience with this. I heard it should be possible?
Thanks a lot for all information!
Luc

Cheers Patrick

No personal experience on this. But I´ve tried to enter Vietnam with a Thai-plated scooter, from Cambodia & Laos, a total 5 times, and this did not work (the persistent "under 175cc=OK" rumour seemed false, but this was in Dec-2006).
I´ve met people in Laos and Cambodia, who travelled with bikes bought from Vietnam, who claimed, that it should work ("it" being entering Vietnam with your own bike, that is known to be problematic – they surely must´ve already exited Vietnam with the bike at that time). But I guess there is no guarantee on anything.... and what I saw on those borders, it might fully depend on who is in charge that day. If you´ve got some time, and can try again, if you got turned back (we did that several times, find accommodation nearby, and return the next morning, hoping there´s new faces to deal with!) then I think you´d have a pretty good chance on a Vietnamese-regoed bike.
And only 1-2 people is better – we were a group of 8, definitely too large to ´fly below the radar unnoticed´.... in fact we almost made it once, got the border police permit and everything, but then unfortunately run into the damn customs ´NO MOTOOBIKE TO VIET NAAM´-guy.. I´d already had my Cambodian visa stamped out, but luckily they could still fix it! They often did not speak any English, BTW.

I went through from Plieku to Ban Lung, it was a peice of cake not issues no bribes, Thailand i went through down by Ko Chang and had not issues (heard of people haveing problems at the border by Angkor Wat, had to sell bike to get through, smells like a set up to me)
Chang Rai over the river to Loas was easy and Loas to Dien Bien North Vietnam also easy, nice ride too.
That was all done from jan to May '11 on Vietnam registered GN125.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
