China - latest requirements

I am planning for a trip to China, Mongolia, Nepal, Russia and the Stans in 2011 or 2012.
I wonder if anyone has the latest information on bringing your own bike into China, and border crossings availability, etc.

hi,
you can get your own vehicle into china, but, if you're alone it will cost you a lot; depends on the route and the duration of stay. i was in a 7 bikes group get into from torugart on aug. 27 and getting out on khunjerab on sept. 1 this year. we'd pay 570 euro each for all permits, guide and hotels except for food and fuel. try to contact a local agency in kashgar (xingjiang); mine was newlands travel.

Thanks for the reply. Yes it seem too difficult for solo independent motorcyclist to ride around China at the moment. Might have to leave out China and do backpacking in another trip instead.

China or shipping around

Hi,
we (2)-on 2 motor bikes- are also checking the possibilties to ship direct to Japan from Thailand, kambodscha or Malaysia or driving through China from Thailand to Shanghai / China and take a ferry from there to Japan.


We will go for the cheapest possible solution.
The plan was also to travel via Russia, Monglia, Stan states. We probably leave out Mongolia as there are more restrictions for the Russian visa now

Hi, thanks for the info.

Does anybody know where to get this information first hand?

I want to source my guide independantly - I have a route, but I want to sort everything myself, and have the bare minimum (legally) services of someone in China to help me.

I am looking to enter China from Lao Cai, Vietnam, travel north to Chengdu and then East through Tibet to Nepal. I have a source of info for the Tibet leg, but first hand information for China seems hard to come by.

I live in Vietnam, and have connections in Southern China, so I'm gonna try and network my way into a good deal, but before I can, I need to know EXACTLY what I'm up against.

Experiences with traveling on a legally Chinese-registered motorcycle out of China

Has anyone had the experience to ride out of China on a China-registered motorcycle (without being a Chinese national)? Did Russia, Mongolia, the Stans, Iran, Turkey, EU countries, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand etc. ever make trouble as to the validity of the bike's registration because China is not member of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic nor has it purely Latin alphabet plates (the province is indicated by Chinese characters)? Iran at least officially demands a Carnet de Passage, where to get one from for a China-registered bike?

Any borders better to be avoided (especially from Xinjiang to the Stans)?

FOR TURKEY,
A--If you are the owner of the bike or have an official letter of attorney for the bike,
1-You will get a period of 6 months to stay in Turkey for the bike.(12 months for retired bikers) This will be stamped on your passport page.
2-You will get the Turkish road insurance at the border.For 3 months 6,- euros.
you will need nothing more for the bike.

It has been done several times - Some examples below. The biggest issue (red tape) is to get out of China via the Northern borders while it seems no problem to get out to Laos.

I drove my car and rode my bike with Chinese plates for the last two month in Austria - no problem, just make sure you have insurance.

we have met another rider who is going over as part of a self created group greatly reducing the cost. I tell you this for 2 reasons 1 its a options for you and 2

Hey guys,

We are currently in Nepal and heading to India for 2/3 months, we are looking for other travelers who are interested in putting a group together to get across China from Nepal into Laos.

There is another group we are aware of doing it in December, ideally we would be a mix of Motorbikes and 4X4's as this way one of the 4X4's can transport the guide that has to be with us. It greatly reduces the cost, im not sure on exact numbers but im putting the feelers out, we need to move quick as it takes 2+ months to sort the paper work out.

Could be tough on a 4x4, too... I´d first try to make sure, when the roads would be open.
