I have just spent 6 months working on an itinerary Shanghai to St. Petersburgh. Everything is do able if you have the money. China is a major stumbling block due to compulsory vehicle and guide. We are a group of six planning the ride and the price per person to go from Shanghai through Tibet and into Krzygistan was US$6700. This was just for the guide and paperwork etc. It did not include any other cost. We have since decided to start in Japan and go through Russia /Mongolia. Much less hassle burocracy and upfront go nowhere cost.

I cant imagine why you would want to go to Afghanistan in the foreseeable future

There is no way to cross from Afghanistan to China. Pakistan > China yes.

Re-think your idea a little. Fly to Shanghai, buy a bike there and ride home... avoiding Afghanistan

Have a read-up on the http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/southern-asia
forum and you will get the idea.

Hi redboots,

Turkey, ===> Iran, ===> Pakistan, ===> China

Is this the way?

I have a few very good Chinese friends, who have Chinese driving licences, would they qualify as a 'guide'

thanks,

'vette

Going from or to Shanghai is really a poor choice of departure or destination, as they are so restrictive on licensing and registration and freedom of movement for motorcycles.

Foreign motorcycle licenses and carnets are not recognized in China, officially.
So it's always going to be tricky and in a legal gray area.

All in all could be easier to arrange buying a bike somewhere in China, then ride it home (still probably not very easy!)

And I´d stay out of Afghanistan, the risk of kidnapping alone is too high.

Hi All,
i would be driving a Land Cruiser.
My very good Chinese friends, would be a good advantage I would hope.
Any way, a little bit of money in the right hands will always make the paperwork smoother.
I know it should not be done, but some times in China, this is required.

There is just the one crossing from Pakistan to China.
There are 3 or 4 from Kazakhstan.

The western borders are VERY well organised now. Trying any "greasing" with the officials there will get you banged up They are most definitely, professional.

I don't know if your friends will be any help. I think they have to be a licensed travel agency.

Cheers,
John

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
