India - Leh WITHOUT Enfield
Travellers,
two years ago I have done Leh on an Enfield, great experience. However, now I plan to go there again and wonder if I should possibly get a bike other than Enfield, maybe an off-road type of bike, maybe a Honda Hero Impulse.
The advantages are it is cheaper, more suitable for off-road and possibly even more reliable.
What do you think?
Cheers,
Mario

We will arrive to Delhi on the 1st of August, that should be early enough to make the tour before the season ends. I will go to Karol Bagh and rent a suitable bike.
Our journey will than continue in Indonesia.
What a pity I couldn't find a way to buy a bike and get it registered on my name in India. Otherwise I would not rent a bike but buy one and have it shipped from Kathmandu to BKK, KL or Indo so we could continue the journey further in the south east.
Do you see a way I could own the Indian bike so I could ship it outside India?
Cheers,
Mario

Well if at all u hire an enfield, hire the ones with the UCE engine and are with carburettor not EFIs, secondly i suppose u get a better deal buying bikes in nepal, ownin an indian bike will be kinda hard because of the legal status of your nationality, i will get back to you soon on this issue.

You absolutely do not, bikes in Nepal carry a 300% import duty, for example a new 350 cc Bullet 'classic' is around 5 lakh NpRps. You will be lucky to find a decent 2nd hand one for $3000 !

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
