september 2014 there is obviousely a new rule in iran that you must have a guide when you want to stay more than 10 days in the country with your own car.

as we didn't want that guide, this is what we did:
when we entered iran, they asked us how long we want to stay in the country and we said not more than 10 days.

in tehran go to the customs headquarter building next to the massive new mosque that is under construction. there ask your way through or maybe call mr. alamdar from the iranian automobil club (021 619 34 325) and he helps you.

then you'll have to go outside the city to "gumruk sharyar" customs warehouses and there to mr. nuri.

after that you probably have to go back to the headquarter.

like that we extended our "car-visa" to 30 days without anyone ever mentioned the need of a guide. we had no problems at exit to turkmenistan.

I'm sorry, but this is perhaps a mis-leading post.

I am not sure what you mean about a 'car visa', but I am assuming that you mean the document which is given upon entering Iran if you DO NOT have a Carnet de Passages.

Just to make things clear - with a Carnet de Passages one may enter Iran for up to 90 days with a vehicle, and there are no additional documents issued by the Iranian authorities.

And another point, assuming you have a visa for Iran, there is no requirement to be escorted. It is only a rule created by the visa issuing agents.

Once you have an Iranian visa there is NO RESTRICTION on entering Iran with a vehicle. Stop circulating incorrect information which could seriously affect peoples' trip plans!

I entered Iran twice this year in July (entering at Pol from Turkmenistan, exiting at Jolfa to Azerbaijan) and October (entering at Nordooz from Armenia, and exiting at Beshmakh to Iraq) with a car. There is NO RESTRICTION on driving a car here! If they told you otherwise at the Bazargan ('Mt Ararat') Border, then that is unique to that border crossing (which it is advisable to avoid anyway). I have also previously entered / exited Iran three times with a vehicle between 2007 and 2010 at borders with Turkmenistan, Pakistan and Azerbaijan and never heard of a 'car visa'.

The ONLY restriction is the visa issuing agency, and they were NOT MADE AWARE of the vehicle.

-i don't know the rules for motorcycles.

-the information about the guide and the 10 days came not from the border officers but from the travel agency in switzerland that we used to get our visa (riahi travel). this is one of the leading agencies for trips to iran in switzerland.

-at the custom warehouse in tehran they looked at my carnet and told me that the duration of stay of the car has expired! that obviousely does not guarantee 90 days for the car even with the carnet.

Exactly the same as cars

Yes, as I said the agencies want you to take a guide. So if you don't tell the agency, you get a visa as normal and can enter with you car and no guide nonsense.

The carnet allows up to 90 days in Iran. You need to tell the guy that stamps your passport that you will stay for 90 days. If you can't read Arabic numerals, then it's best to get someone to check before you leave the border. That said, I once was unaware of the date and exited Iran without a problem.


Don't tell your visa agent about your plan to bring in a vehicle, and you can enjoy Iran without the restrictions and expense of a guide
