I'm headed to Delhi at the end of the month and wanted to get advice on what paperwork you need to get when buying a used bike and the process involved in getting third party insurance.

Since you won't be able to register the bike in your name, make sure you have the necessary transfer documents so you can sell the bike at the end of your trip. Generally they are form 29 and 30. Make sure they are signed by the last owner.
Also, it will be easier to sell the bike in the place where it is registered. People are reluctant to buy bikes registered in another state as transferring them from another state is quite a tedious process.
Also ensure that the insurance and Pollution Certificate are up to date. It's generally quite inexpensive to get these updated. If the police stop you they will ask for these, so it's worth getting it done if it's lapsed.
I'm not sure about how to get the Third party insurance in your name. SInce the bike won't be in your name, it might be difficult. But I might be wrong, so it's worth trying.
Any other advice about buying a used bike in Delhi would be appreciated, I was thinking about buying one from a classified instead of a dealer as there are some cheap bikes available , bad idea?
What bike are you looking to buy? If you're looking at classifieds, the website olx.com is a good site to find a bike.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Daniel.
