Renting Enfield in India

Has anyone rented an Enfield from India Bikes in Mbumbai?

They quoted me for a 500cc 22 BHP Royal Enfield Bullet (with disc brakes and large pannier frames)- Rs.8500 a month for 6 months.
Thanks

Aidan

HI Adian,
Where are you now?? Why do you want to rent it ???
8500*6 = 51000 Rs, For this amount you can easily buy a second hand bullet in prime condition!!!(350 CC or 500CC).
In fact I bought my 2 year old Bullet(350 CC 18 BHP, Bullet Electra for Rs 38,000) and while selling you can still get a good sum back!!
The price is ridiculous. The best thing would be to get in touch with the local clubs or the Royal Enfield Dealers / Some good Mechanics they can get you a much better deal!
Mail me if you want some more details.
PS : you will get the links to the RE clubs at the RE website www.royalenfield.com
Contact me when you are in Bombay/Pune(180Kms form Bombay)
regards,
Red Bull

There is a dealer in Delhi, who rents and sells. Mukesh. I was wondering if there a Mukesh in Mumbai. Normally I buy an Enfield and sell it, for the same price. However, I'm only here for a week this time.

If you get a lead on a shop that rents, please let me know.

Now to answer your question...

You can buy an Enfield for $500-$600. Usually you have more leverage if you buy from a fellow traveller.

Expect to put dribbles of money towards repairs regardless if the bike is in great condition. We're not talking huge sums, a couple dollars here and there. I had to have piston replace and it cost me $25, but I was taking the bike home so I kept it up and did extra work on it.

You probably already know this, but in India travel with extra cables, spark plugs, tire tube, patches, and oddly enough a chain (mine fell off and before I could even stop to fetch it some boys snatched it).

When it came time to sell the bikes I didn't keep, I sold one to a fellow traveller and one to my brother who was arriing as I was leaving.

Travellers like buying from travellers because we tend to keep the bikes up better. When my mechanic opened up the bike to do repairs their were make-shift parts out of coke-cans, and other random bits. Ingenious and I admire their creativity. However, once I had all real parts put in it ran like a dream.

Any way, you shouldn't have a problem reselling at purchase price if you leave yourself enough time to get the word out and are in an area with other travellers.

Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and other areas are great for buying and selling. I bought one in Katmandu and one in Mysore, both from travellers but it was shere raw luck.

When are you in Mumbai? I'm hoping to rent and pop down to Goa for a bit. I usually travel in the north or in the Bangalore area and never took time to check out Goa. I'm hoping I'll be catching the end of the season, and not be too busy.

Good luck! Have fun!

Cat

Check out:

and, in particular, see my post on 07 Nov 2005.

Karol Bagh district in Delhi is much easier for Enfields for tourists, IMHO.

Thanks for the replies. I'm currently in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. I'll be flying to India in the beginning of March (probably Delhi) and will buy a bike there. You've persuaded me not to rent!

I'll let you know how I get on.
Thanks
Aidan
