Riding naked in the Thar Desert
A quick word...for those who need to reconnect to living, try Rajastan - Pushkar, Jaisalmer, etc etc. Fly (between Nov. and Feb, avoid Xmas) to Delhi, train to Rajastan. 2nd class sleeper. Cheap as chips.
Go to Jaisalmer, stay in the fort for 200 rupees the double room, chill out on the roof top there and look over the desert. Practice your Lawrence of Arabia faraway look there.
Then hire a bike from ShivaBikes (website to follow); taking a 125 for 200 rupees a day, less if you take a long hire. You can get an Enfield too if you really really want to.
Then head out for wherever you want, maybe the road to Sam, out towards the Pakistani border. You'll get turned back at Sam if you have no permit - theyre a bit nervy about Pakistan. Camels all over the place, cows, scrub and sandy desert in the National Park area. Lots of tracks going off into nowhere. The Thar Desert is big so this is only a taster. You could head further on down to the Great Rann of Kutch -quite a name eh?
Oh yes! the naked bit...
No fairing
No GPS
No compass
No helmet etc
No insurance(probably)
No guided Tour
No Tour guide
No worries
Get the appropriate maps and books...plan a rough idea ...and then change that when you get here...enjoy.
The Indian people are fantastic...really great. Remember they were producing advanced philosophical texts 5000 years ago, when Europeans lurked in caves and Yorkshiremen struggled and failed to say' 'Ilkley moor bataat'. They still work at it today...
