What Bike to buy for long trip Southestern Asia - Europe
Hello,

So I'm planning with a friend of mine to do a trip in Southeastern Asia.
We'd prefer to start from Malaysia, visit what we can (ex: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodge, India,etc..) and if we can, come back to Switzerland.

Our idea is to buy a motorbike there, so we need some advice on the prices and the bikes themselves...

1. Is it a good idea to start in Malaysia? we thought about that after reading this: Buying A Motorcycle In South East Asia - Unleash Your Adventure
Normally we planned to start in thailand, but it seems pretty complicated to do so..

2. We like Royal Enfield motorbikes, but after reading a bit, it seems they're not very reliable.. What do you think? (We are still open for other types of bikes, if they don't exceed 25kw of power (or ~33 horse power) and they are good for long trips)

3. What si the price range for Royal Enfield in Malaysia? for other bikes? And if Royal Enfields are good, where to buy them the cheaper?

The problem with buying a bike there .. What do you do with it when you get it home? You'll have to

Import it to your country ... $?
If you want to use it on the road - get it registered .. so will it meet the rules $?


This problem vanishes if you buy and sell in the same country. Also means you don't ship the bike to other countries so avoid transport costs etc.

You might be best to chose a bike that is already in use in your home country if your bring it home. At least this way you could sell it off as parts even if you cannot get past the rules for registration.

So you say I should sell it back in the same country? or the same region for example if I buy it in Malaysia and sell it in India, will there be problems?

New Enfields in Malaysia are around RM30,000-40,000 from memory. 2nd hand market here is not that great but you could try contacting Sunny Cycles in KL where most of the overlanders go who might be able to help:

To give you an idea, I bought an imported early 90's XR600R here which would cost around RM15,000 from a dealer. A brand new Kawasaki KLR250 or Honda CRF250 is around RM23,000.

You need to look into Carnets, like a passport for bikes to ensure you don't sell in another country without paying import duty. India's import duty was v high. One option would be to buy an Enfield in Nepal (try Hearts and Tears http://www.heartsandtears.com/ ) and ride it back as heard buying and exporting from India can be a headache.

thank you for all that information, I wîll look into that
Just one thing that still bothers me, is the reliability of the enfields, because I read a few reviews that say they were not that good and had to be maintained pretty often...
But I would like to know from a "real" user, are the royal enfields good for a lonf trip like that? (ex: all India)
