BMW 1979 R100T Off Road?
Hey there
Im setting out soon for RTW, Europe>>> Far East
I like to go out of the way whever i am, and know that ill find myself in some pretty wild places. I;m expecting the occasional foray on some hairy dirt 'roads' you know the kind, they are more like waterfalls when its raining....
And then there will be the long long dirt tracks of central asia.
But these extremes will most likely be less of the trip than the paved roads of europe and asia. And this bike is such a joy to ride on pavement...
My bikes a 1979 BMW R100T, equipped with new heavy duty Progressive shocks and a complete rebuild. I love this bike, its very light for its power, and it fits like a dream. Ive ridden it on mountain dirt roads in New Mexico, and it felt fine, but that was well maintained roads with an unloaded bike.
Anyone think its completely crazy to consider taking this bike offroad? Anyone doing/done it?
btw, im selling this bike in us before i leave. Have decided to buy a used bike in Germany, and am trying ti decide whether to go with another r100 or to go with an F650.
Thanks

If you were taking your R100T to Europe, I'd probably say stick with it since you are clearly happy with it - BUT an F650 is far superior off-road - though FAR from a REAL dirt bike - and you will almost certainly enjoy the trip much more on one.
DO understand that taking a European bike back home to the USA can be a royal pain in the butt. Plan on reselling it to a European who wants to ride it home, or doing a rtw and selling it again in Europe.
And do keep us posted for the ezine!

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
