Which should I sell ? 1997 XRV750 Africa Twin or 2006 R1200GS - I can only keep one.
I've got to filter down my fleet from eight to two bikes due to moving house and possibly overseas move. My R45, VFR800, NX650 and GSXR1000 are already gone this last few weeks.
I've decided to keep one road/touring bike and one proper off-road bike (DRZ400).
So I have to decide between these two bikes.
750 Africa Twin : I have ploughed A LOT of time and money into this bike . Powder coated frame, engine rebuilt, suspension replaced, seat modded etc. I will NEVER get back my investment. It owes me £5000 and it's probably worth £3000 as It has tatty fairings and 80,000 miles which will keep the re-sale value low. Even though its mechanically SUPURB. Better than most. It's also a bike that you know you could take around the world, fix easily and not worry about. And with some courage, it can handle rough roads and trails. It is also a bike that looks awesome and has a lot of character.
However, 'Two up' it's not great. As a couple, we struggle. It doesn't have a lot of power and you can't call it exciting. It's a plodder. It's not as smooth and comfortable as the GS it doesn't have ABS. But it does return 55-60 mpg with a 23l tank. A good old fashioned 90's monster traily.
My 1200GS: I got it for a great price. It's almost mint. I'll make money on it for sure. It has all the GSA gear on a GS chassis. A perfect combo. It's a wonderful two up bike and just soaks up the miles. It's safe, comfortable and it's reliable (For a GS). It's definitely the most 'salable'. On paper, it's probably the best bike to have in the garage as a 'Do all' The wife loves it on the back and we've been all over the UK on it. However, it doesn't excite. It's an oilhead GS. Devoid of soul. And they're bloody everywhere. It will never turn heads like the Africa Twin.
What would you keep ??
