How about just putting some longer shocks on the Intruder, some knobly tires 3 dry bags and some bungee cords. Use the rest of your money for gas, food and alcahol.

Scrambler?
A scrambler has been to Mongolia and Africa (see Youtube). Can't get much more off-road than that? Australian Earth-Roamers have been in 'BMW GS' territory in Alaska and Canada on pretty much standard T100s. It's easy to say 'take a lightweight' as weight is a killer but I wouldn't want to be on a 250 on long trips, too slow, too dangerous and any weight will make them top heavy. DR400 for a long trip? With 3 airhawks maybe...
I'd do it with this Earth-Roamers : Alaska (Part 3)

Ever since I watched Jean Claude van Damme on the Trumpy in Nowhere to Run ( Nowhere to Run (1993) - IMDb), I was in love.
Reading Ted Simons journey around the world on his sold me.
Yes it's not the best bike, but then neither is a R80 or R100, but lots of people still believe they're the best thing since swiss cheese.
Definitely my 1st choice for a retro-cool tourer.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
