#metoo

Hello

After seeing the outpouring of women disclosing abuse they have suffered, i'd thought I'd let you know that #metoo have had hassle on the road.

I threatened to chop a mans bollocks off once when he grabbed my leg in a car.

A member of this community grabbed my boob when I stayed at his house. I didn't ask him to.

And etc etc, many other stories I could recall, however it doesn't put me off solo (or with companion) travel.

How do you ladies fair on the road? Its sad that 'we' the women's community are having this conversation!

I'm very glad your experiences haven't put you off solo travelling. I've been very fortunate in that I've experienced no major harassment myself. I've been in tense situations but they weren't related to gender. My experiences have been more along the lines of others seeming to want to take care of me ...whether I want it or not at times

The only two issues I face when travelling solo, even in my own country and the USA at times, is the frequent disbelief from people when they encounter a fully geared up, loaded up female on a motorcycle on her own; and, in some countries, young gigolos thinking a single white female is fair game even if she's old enough to be their mother. Annoying but nothing that feels threatening so far. Knock on wood.

Thumbs down It happens...

Yes, unfortunately, numerous situations from groping in the street to policemen/customs officials being a bit too solicitous in their care for the overseas lone traveller and the guy who gave me a medical checkover (?!) and also where someone doesn't get the message that you're not interested - I've rarely had to hit them

And there was even one guy who ended up with my boot print on the front of his t-and who then continued to wear it as a badge of honour! (Aussie truck overlander)

And then there are the just plain sleazy...

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
