Yamaha XT660R - round the world

I just finished my trip around the world - 32.000 km in 95 days, and I must say that my bike, 2007 Yamaha XT660r was great. Not a single failure all on the way, and handling, performance, reliability was great. I did a lttle modification before I left, - bigger tank, new exhaust 2-1 system and other smaller things, but overall it worked out great.

it,s official , yamaha today showed off it,s new xt660 tenere , it comes with a 22 litre underseat fuel tank . i think yamaha have just stolen the bmw f800gs,s thunder . available in 2008 .

What is there not to like about this bike ?

(Except that I've just wasted a fortune renovating my Super Ten, which I no longer love because I want one of these, right now.)

It will be more reliable than a KTM Adv, lighter than an 800gs and loads of good stuff on the way too it seems.

i think bmw will end up kicking themselves that they did not release their F800GS sooner , and do not forget that the beemer will cost A LOT MORE than the new tenere .

I have travelled the world on a 1986 XT600Z tenere (270.000km on the clock) for more than six years. Maybe if I do it again in 10 or 20 years, I will take the the new 2008 XT660Z. I like the look of the bike, but of course before I buy it for my next journey I will have to go more into details. But I am sure that Yamaha is back with a good new travel bike, congratulations to Iwata.

I feel 8 years old again and waiting for Christmas day

Times like this I wish I worked for Yamaha instead of Kawasaki and Suzuki.

Ill be ordering one in the spring.

Everything seems perfect. Nice strong steel frame, screen, tucked away exhaust (unlike the stupid 660 traily), 22 litre underseat tank and proper brakes.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I seriously cant wait. Yamaha have made a seriously good move here.

My only gripe is that I can see my XT600E taking second place in my travel fleet

P.S Have you noted how the grey on the Tenere matches perfectly with my power coated metal mules

Great to hear from yet another trouble free ride on the R. Not sure why so many people (who don't ride it) make such great effort in slaggin' that particular bike.

On the verge of doing my cross Africa trip on an R myself. Modded similarly like yours, but no 2in1 exhaust.

And back on track...

Try and make a comparison on Yamaha's site between this new Tenere and the R. The two things that stand out is the bigger tank, and the 10 cm better groundclearence. Pending the price of purchase, you could save the bigger tank purchase and the 2in1 exhaust (if you feel it's necessary) for the R and buy the Tenere instead. But other than that, the data page reveals no real difference. And the engine...yup..the same as on the R.

Wow!! As a stateside owner of a 1983 XT600Z Tenere and a 1991 XTZ750 Super Tenere (both greymarket bikes), I can only hope that Yamaha will have enough sense to bring it to us in the USA. Based on their past history, it is very unlikely. I will put one on order the moment they do.

I've always wondered why the states gets such the shitty end of the stick when it comes to good bikes.

You didnt get the Africa twin, you didnt get the proper tenere and you didnt get the un corked XR650R

Lets hope you get the new one huh.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
